Culture significantly influences how English is learned and used. Students should understand that cultural norms and social expectations vary greatly from country to country and community to community, which affects communication. 

Techniques for Developing Pragmatic Competence

To develop pragmatic skills, several techniques can be employed:

- Explicit Instruction: Teachers can directly teach speech acts, conversational implicatures, and politeness strategies.

- Role-Playing: This technique allows students to practice social situations and develop communication skills in a safe environment.

- Case Analysis: Students can analyze real or hypothetical situations to understand how to apply pragmatics in different contexts.

Examples of Cases Where Pragmatics Matters

1. Requesting a Favor: In English, asking for a favor can range from being direct to using more polite expressions like "Could you please...?" or "Would you mind...?". The choice depends on the context and relationship with the speaker.

2. Expressing an Opinion: In some contexts, it's important to express opinions respectfully, using phrases like "In my opinion..." or "I think...". This helps avoid conflicts and maintain harmonious communication.

3. Accepting or Declining an Invitation: Knowing how to accept or decline an invitation is important. For example, accepting with "Thank you, I'd love to" or declining with "Thank you for inviting me, but I won't be able to attend" maintains respectful communication.
